ROBSON — After the first round of the Region II Class 4A regional golf tournament, the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats are in sixth place.
The Lady Cats at 369 are 51 strokes behind leader Highland Park’s 318 in competition being held at the Wildhorse Golf Course in Robson.
The 5,068-yard, par 72 course is known for being difficult due to the wind in the area.
First round scores for Sulphur Springs are: Kirstie Wallace, 84; Britney Cheatham, 87; Miranda Conway, 94; Kaley Perry, 104; Kaitlyn Potts, 106.
In medalist individual competition, Danielle Johnson of Sulphur Springs had a 97 for 12th place.
The competition in the event concludes today.
The Sulphur Springs boys will play a practice round today at the course before competiting in action Wednesday and Thursday.
It is the first appearance for the boys in regional in several years according to SSHS boys golf coach Ross Funk.
“It’s hard to know how the course will play. It’s out in the middle of nowhere with lots of wind up on a hill,” Funk said.
The SS boys team is very young featuring a make-up of freshman, Kason Childress; sophomores, Chance Byrd and Cameron Wilks and juniors, Adam Perry and Cort Walker. None of the players or Funk have experience at the regional level.
