HALLSVILLE — Sulphur Springs athletes did not rack up a lot of medals in District 13-4A track meet, but they had some bright spots.

Like the junior varsity girls representing the fighting spirit of the Sulphur Springs athletes.

The Sulphur Springs JV girls finished strong with five individual first place finishes and won the 1,600-meter relay to capture the first place team award with 204 points.

In the 1,600-meter relay, the team of Kayla Phillips, Brooke Hayward, Melinda Escobar and Mallory White turned in a time of 4:38.01 to nip Texas High’s team which came in at 4:38.11.

Sulphur Springs was behind at the turn, but Texas High started to slow. Down the final 20 yards White gained on the THigh girls and lunged at the wire to take the  event, falling in a heap on the track as her teammates congratulated.

A Sulphur Springs near miss came by Ross Hicks in the 1,600 meter run. To make regional, you have to finish in the top three, Hicks got fourth.

Hicks ran as fast as he could put turned in a time of 4:30.10 trailing the third place runner Todd Schrader of Pine Tree’s time of 4:36.66.

What made Hick’s effort special was that teammate Preston Weaver came in fifth with a 4:39.57 time as the Sulphur Springs runners encouraged each other before and during the race.
