The Wildcats won 13-8 at Pine Tree in a wild game lasting over three hours.
Marshall lost 3-2 against Texas High to open district.
The Mavericks are led by Texas A&M signee Cam Haller. Haller paces the team with 18 hits (three homers) and 14 RBI.
“Haller is one of the best players in district, that’s why he’s signed with A&M,” said Jerrod Hammack, Sulphur Springs head baseball coach. “He’s catching for Marshall, I don’t know if he'll play catcher in college.”
Hammack said, “Marshall is one of the teams picked to finish in the top four in our district. We hope to have some momentum from the Pine Tree win. We just need to cut down on walks and errors.”
