It was a heartbreaking game, but the most exciting I've been involved in since I've been here at Como-Pickton," said Como-Pickton Eagles head baseball coach Dustin Carr. "The teams exchanged leads throughout the game and in the seventh inning, down 4-3, Como-Pickton mounted a comeback to score three runs and take the lead. The rally started with Zach Carpenter hitting a sharp single, Spencer Boyd followed with a good at bat that led to a single to left, Ryan Carpenter then hit a triple to right field to score both and take the lead. Ryan then scored on an error to give us a two run lead."
Ryan Carpenter pitched a great game and was backed up by solid defensive play by Austin Darby at short and Spencer Boyd in center.
In the bottom half of the seventh inning is where the heartbreak began. Ryan quickly took care of the first two batters to give the Eagles two outs, one away from a win over a tough district opponent, Grand Saline Indians.
The next batter worked a walk, which brought the tying run to home plate. After a good battle between pitcher and batter, he lined a double to right field and proceeded to third on the throw home and a close play at the plate. The score sat at 6-5.
The next batter hit the first pitch sharply to left and the game was 6-all tie. He advanced to second on a steal, then was driven home by a chopper through the left side. It ended on a sour note for the Eagles with the Indians winning, 7-6.
"We played well the whole game but just couldn’t hang on in the end, but we did make a strong comeback and were in a position to win, so it was a building block from last year's season," coach Carr added.
The Leonard tournament scheduled for this weekend has been canceled due to rain.
