Blame it on the rain.
Or the wet and cold and very muddy conditions.
But Mother Nature’s desire to water the parched earth in Hopkins County has sure put a crimp on the schedules of area sports teams.
The only outdoor event still scheduled is soccer.
According to Sulphur Springs soccer coaches Andy Holt and Joel Bailey, the games set for tonight and Saturday in North Lamar are still going to be held.
“Playing in these conditions should be interesting,” Andy Holt, Sulphur Springs head boys soccer coach said. “It all depends on how much water is standing on the field. If the field drains well, then the ball should skip. If the field holds water then it should be a slow game. We will have to watch our footing and make sure we make good contact with the ball. Our game plan and strategy doesn’t change, we will do what it takes to win the game.” The SS varsity are scheduled to play at North Lamar at 5:30 p.m. today with the JV to follow.
The Lady Cats will play Saturday at North Lamar with games set at 11 a.m. (JV) and 1 p.m. (varsity) at that location.
“Weather is something you have to deal with. We can not change it; just have to play in it. The ball will be slick, water-logged, and feel like kicking a brick. Standing water and mud will slow things down. Passing and finishing shots become more difficult. Our only concern is the score one more than the opposing team,” said Sulphur Springs girls coach Bailey.
All area track meets in the area which were planned for today or Saturday were cancelled.
That include a junior high track meet in Hallsville and varsity meets in Gilmer and Como-Pickton and other locations.
Softball and baseball have also been forced to cancel or postpone events.
The Sulphur Springs junior varsity/freshman softball tournament will was to be played at the SSHS diamond and three fields at Coleman Park were a casualty to the weather. The field which was to feature some 20 teams is now rescheduled tentatively for March 26 and 28. Teams attending will probably change due to games already set up by other squads.
The Sulphur Springs softball Lady Cats will play here Monday against Hallsville with the JV games at 2 p.m. and the varsity tilt at 3 p.m. The teams will play Tuesday at Pine Tree with games at 4:30 and 6 p.m. in Longview. The ninth grade softball team will play here Friday, March 20 against North Hopkins at noon also that same day, the Lady Cats JV and varsity will host Longview at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. in a District 13-4A game.
Baseball tournaments involving local and area teams have also been washed out.
The SS junior varsity was to participate in the Forney tournament, but the event was cancelled as was the varsity baseball tournament in Ennis.
The North Hopkins baseball tournament which was planned for today through Saturday was also cancelled.
