MARSHALL — Pitching and defense.

That’s what won the District 13-4A opener for the Sulphur Springs Wildcats according to head coach David Carrillo.

Carrillo said his team used the mixture of pitching and defense to shut out Marshall 3-0 on the road Tuesday in a key game.

“We were kind of nervous I guess, we really didn’t hit the ball like we have been hitting it,” Carrillo said. “But we had great pitching, so we did not have to score that much.” Kaci Kennedy was the starter and winning pitcher for the Lady Cats. Kennedy faced 12 batters, allowed two hits, no runs, struck out one and walked one. She threw 35 pitches, 21 strikes.

Taylor Clifton had an impressive relief pitching appear as she earned her third save of the year. She faced 15 batters, struck out, four and gave up four hits and one walk. She was very accurate on the night throwing 50 pitches total, 42 for strikes.

“We played well enough to win the game. We got a couple of runs early and then we back up the pitching,” Carrillo said. “Marshall is a good team, so it was great to get a win on the road. It’s a really good feeling to be sitting at 1-0 in district. Getting the first win in district is always big.”

Sulphur Springs was held to six hits on the night in the seven inning game played in one hour and 45 minutes.

Mac Morgan had the only run batted in with a double. Jaylee Eppars was 3-for-3 at the plate. Also getting hits were Brittani Crawford and T’Kea Johnson. Hall, Crawford and Johnson all scored run.

The Sulphur Springs JV won 7-4 over Marshall. Michelle Segleski had two hits, four RBI; Ariel Spataro, two walks, two runs; Kyri Ivery, single, run scored, RBI. Mallory Rawson was the winning pitcher.

The Sulphur Springs game with Hallsville has been shifted from Friday to Monday.
