SSHS academic team takes 2nd at Texas High UIL meet

Sulphur Springs High School's University Interscholastic League Academic Team took second place in the sweepstakes competition at last weekend's  inaugural Texas High Tiger Invitational Academic Meet in Texarkana, while several other students placed high at a math and science meet in Paris.

Three students brought home first place finishes individually, while the spelling and vocabulary group took the first-place team prize.

Two other students claimed second place and six others took third place individually. The computer science team also had the second-highest score at the meet, while journalism and speech students combined for the second-highest point totals in their competitions.

  • Wayne Rasmussen — Informative Speaking
  • Autumn Keiss — Feature Writing
  • Katy Mason — Headline Writing and Social Studies
  • Taylor Moore — Current Events
  • Lyndsi Bible — Spelling and Vocabulary


Fourth Place Individuals

  • Kade Gibson — Persuasive Speaking
  • Taylor Ausbrooks — Computer Science


Fifth Place Individuals

  • Tyler Aaron — Science
  • Brendy Molina — Informative Speaking
  • Mike Law — Editorial Writing
  • Autumn Keiss — News Writing and Computer Science


Sixth Place Individuals

  • Jeff Spears — Computer Science
  • Tyler Aaron — Ready Writing


First Place Team

Second Place Teams

  • Computer Science — Taylor Ausbrooks, Autumn Keiss, and Jeff Spears
  • Overall Journalism — 2nd
  • Overall Speech — 2nd

Meanwhile, the SSHS Math and Science Team traveled to Paris to compete in the North Lamar Math and Science Meet. Rebecca Sehnert placed fourth in mathematics for freshmen, while Natanael Gonzalez placed fourth in calculator applications for juniors and Andrew Gregory placed fifth in science for juniors.
