A drawing will be held this week to determine the order of names on the ballot when Sulphur Springs voters go to the polls in May to choose three representatives on the City Council.
The drawing will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the Council Room at the Sulphur Springs Municipal Building, 125 South Davis St. It will decide whose names appear first on the ballots voters will use for both early voting, held April 27 through May 5, and the general election on Saturday, May 9.
Candidate filing closes today at the City Secretary’s office at the municipal building.
Up for election are a trio of three-year posts held currently by Place 1 Councilman Garry Jordan, Place 2 Councilman Clay Walker, and Place 3 Councilman Oscar Aguilar.
Aguilar is so far unopposed in his bid for re-election to a second term.
Jordan, who filed candidacy papers Friday, will have at least one opponent, Craig Johnson, a Sulphur Springs native and owner of Kramerica Outdoor Advertising. Jordan is finishing his third term on the council.
The third incumbent, Clay Walker, had not filed to run for re-election Monday morning, but his seat has already drawn a large amount of interest, with Claude Walter, Bradley Edge, Steve Carmody and Allen Vaughan all having signed up to challenge for Place 2.
Municipal elections will be held on Saturday, May 9. Early voting is scheduled to begin Monday, April 27, and continue until May 5. Thursday, April 9, is the last day to register to vote in the election.
