With one day remaining to file for candidacy for the three seats on Sulphur Springs City Council, only two of the positions — Place 1 and Place 2 – had drawn challengers for the May 9 election. Of the three incumbents, only two had signed up to seek re-election,  Place 1 Councilman Garry Jordan and Place 3 Councilman Oscar Aguilar, who for the last year has been serving as mayor.

So far, Jordan is the only challenged incumbent. Craig Johnson is challenging him for Place 1 on the council. Oscar Aguilar was the only person to sign up to run for Place 3 as of 4 p.m. Friday.

The race for Place 2 on the council is also contested. Squaring off in the May 9 election will be Claude Walter, Bradley Edge, Steve Carmody and Allen Vaughan.

Candidate filing for Sulphur Springs City Council will continue from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, March 9, at the Municipal Building, located at 125 South Davis St. See Gale Roberts, city secretary, to file.
