Como-Pickton and Yantis school boards during their Aug. 11 meetings are slated to set the date for a public meeting and adoption of the tax rate and budget for the 2014-15 school year, among other items.

Como-Pickton Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees are slated to hold a special 5 p.m. workshop to develop the 2014-15 budget. Then, during the 6 p.m. meeting Monday in Como-Pickton Conference Center, District Business Manager Lenise Boseman is scheduled to propose a tax rate and date for the meeting to adopt the budget and tax rate. She will also present recommendations for gasoline and diesel based on submitted bids.

Reports on the monthly financial and investment reports as well as the current and delinquent tax report will be presented during the business and finance report portion of the meeting.

Athletic Director Conley Bland will present for board consideration bids for a weight room expansion.

Bland at the July 14 board meeting presented bids received for the proposed expansion of the current fieldhouse so that it may be used for more than one purpose at a time during inclement weather. Trustees at that meeting showed favor for expanding the fieldhouse, but asked that Bland go out for more bids to get the best possible proposal, Superintendent Kay Handlin said.

“This will give them more room. Students do have access to and can put in a batting cage in the existing building, but can’t use the weight equipment when you move the batting cage inside during inclement weather,” explained Handlin following the July board meeting.

The superintendent said administrators hope to evaluate and approve the bid options presented tonight, so that construction can begin. The project, if started soon, would then likely continue into the start of the school year.

Handlin tonight is also scheduled to present and discuss accountability summary ratings as well as a recommendation to move the September board meeting to a different date.

Career and Technology Education Coordinator Michael Bowen Monday night is scheduled to present for approval CTE certifications and out-of-state travel for CTE during the school year.

Trustees are slated at the end of Monday’s meeting to enter into executive session to discuss any personnel recommendations or issues presented since the last board meeting. They will then reconvene in open session to take any action resulting from the executive session.

Yantis Independent School District Board of Trustees during their 7 p.m. meeting in the school cafeteria will be asked to amend the 2013-14 budget, consider a tax rate, then set a date for a public hearing to adopt the 2014-15 budget and tax rate. Other financial matters on the agenda include approving a proposed salary for the school nurse and employee insurance.

Trustees will review the 2014-15 handbooks. They will be asked to consider adopting the 2014-15 student code of conduct, a modified instructional calendar and legal counsel retainer, along with the consent agenda which includes the monthly bills and minutes from two July board meetings.

Superintendent Penny White is slated to give a report on upcoming back to school activities at the school and a financial report will also be given during the Aug. 11 session.

At the end of the meeting, trustees are slated to enter into executive session to discuss employment of new personnel.
