After sweating, drilling and running, it’s finally time to play another team.

“We are excited about the scrimmage. We are ready to play after all this time. We have been scrimmaging some against each other, but this will be good,” said Allison Irvin, Sulphur Springs head volleyball coach.
The Lady Cats will host a dual scrimmage Friday at 10 a.m. at the high school gym. They will rotate action against teams from Commerce and Cumby.
“We’ve had over 40 trying out for the team. Some are still trying out because they were late or were injured,” Irvin said. “We are going to have smaller teams.”
The coach said 11 players are currently on the varsity with nine on the junior varsity and a dozen freshmen chosen to compete.
Irvin said, “With the smaller groups, players will get to play more. We will have two freshmen on the varsity.”
“The girls have been very coachable,” Irvin said. “They are working hard and it’s all been great.”
Irvin is in her first year as the Sulphur Springs head volleyball coach. She also has led programs at Jasper and Belton. She taught at the Sulphur Springs Middle School last year.
“We are excited to be playing Commerce and Cumby, those programs have been pretty solid in recent years,” Irvin said.
The coach said the teams will take turns playing other in the high school gym with a 50-minute running clock.
“We won’t keep score, it is more like a practice,” Irvin said. “We just want to see how we will do against another team. It will be a game-like scenario. Everyone will play so we can see how they work together.”
