One of the two suspects in Sunday night’s E-Z Mart robbery was taken into custody Tuesday night, thanks to a tip from a Greenville policeman; Sulphur Springs police are still looking for the second man involved.

Tobias Mirun Whetstone, 24, of Sulphur Springs remained in the county jail Wednesday morning in lieu of $100,000 bond on the first-degree felony aggravated robbery charge. According to jail reports, Whetstone is also known by the names Bernabe Slis, Tobias Myron Whetsone, Tobias A. and Tobias Mirum Whetsone and Tobias Myron Whetstone.

Police Monday asked for the public’s help in identifying the two men who were caught on video entering the E-Z Mart store on East Shannon Road at Helm Lane about 10:40 p.m. Sunday. One man reportedly jumped over the counter and grabbed the cash drawer, which was estimated to contain less than $50, and left. One of the pair also reportedly displayed a handgun during the incident.

Greenville Police Office Chris Rosamond learned of the robbery and, after seeing the information on the suspects, Tuesday afternoon contacted investigators at Sulphur Springs Police Department, where he previously worked, to relay information about at least one of the suspects, according to Sulphur Springs Police Capt. Jay Sanders.

Sulphur Springs Police, lead by Lt. Investigator Rusty Stillwagoner, utilized the information to further develop the robbery case, identifying Whetstone as one of the two men in the photos taken from store surveillance  video, Sanders noted.

Officers received sufficient information to obtain a warrant for Whetstone’s arrest and went to the 24-year-old’s Ross Street address about 7:30 p.m to serve it.

When police arrived, officer Seth McDaniel noted on arrest reports, they attempted to make contact with the robbery suspect, but Whetsone refused to exit the house. Officers “set up a perimeter around the house.” After a few minutes, Whetstone “came out of the residence and laid down on the ground,” the arrest report noted. He was arrested and jailed on the first-degree felony charge just before 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The second suspect still remains at large. Anyone with information about his identity or whereabouts are encouraged to contact Stillwagoner at SSPD at 903-885-7602 or call the tip into Crime Stoppers at 903-885-2020.
