Hopkins Co. Angels lose 5-2 in World Series

    ATOKA, Tenn. — The Hopkins County All-Stars lost 5-2 to an undefeated North Carolina team Monday in the Dixie Angels X-play Girls Softball World Series.

    The loss was the first of the tournament for Hopkins County. In that game, Mattison Buster pitched a complete game, striking out six. She also had a single. Other top hitters were Makayla Buchanan and Katelyn Rusheon, each going 2-for-2, getting one hit each were Journi Hohenberger, Grace Magnuson and Faith Watkins.
    The Hopkins County team scored one run in the first to take the lead early, but failed to pad the advantage, leaving the bases loaded.
    North Carolina strung together five hits as they erupted for four of their five runs during a third inning rally. Most of the damage done with two outs recorded.
    The Hopkins County All-Stars are assured of finishing in the top four places in the event.
    Twelve teams started the event with the best teams in the nation represented.
    The Hopkins County team will meet Alabama today at 6:30 p.m. in the semi-finals of the double elimination tournament.
    The Alabama team advanced to the semi-finals edging Mississippi, 4-3. The loss eliminated Mississippi from contention.
    The other semi-final game pits the  North Carolina team against Tennessee.
