Not much news in the community this week. Things have been nice with the mild cold front that came through this week. During the middle of the heat of summer it sure did feel nice to walk outside in the mornings and it be in the 70s.
My condolences go out to two families with Miller Grove connections this week. Robert “Jack” Ferguson and Elston Petty passed away this week.
Elston was a Miller Grove student who had lived in the area for most of his life. He and my uncle, Johnny Darrow, were about the same age. Elston was born April 26, 1956, and passed away July 14. Arrangements are under the direction of Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs.
Robert Olan “Jack” Ferguson was born and raised in Miller Grove, the son of Clyde Curtis Ferguson and Johnnie Lovell (Mayes) Ferguson. Robert served in World War II and was later married to LaNita Cranford. Robert passed away July 13 in Arlington. Funeral services were Wednesday at Moore Funeral Home in Arlington with a graveside service that followed in Miller Grove Cemetery. He was laid to rest near the flag pole that he had donated to the cemetery as a memorial to the veterans that were buried in the cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Lera (Darrow) Ferguson; and sisters Vallie (Ferguson) McElvy, Dorothy Nell (Ferguson) Milner and an infant sister. He is survived by his wife; daughter Anna Ferguson; brother Johnny Ferguson and wife Mary Lynn, of Miller Grove; and sisters Mary Lou (Ferguson) Akins of Miller Grove, Ruby (Ferguson) Long of Fort Worth and Bonnie (Ferguson) Callan of Mesquite.
Happy birthday this week to Tiffney (Goldsmith) Darrow on July 15, Hagan Holland and Colby Hoover on July 16, and Paula (Smith) Cummings on July 17.
