Celebration Plaza is the place to be Saturday night, when the 23rd Annual Independence Day Celebration begins at 7:50 p.m.

After a posting of the colors and a reciting of the pledge of allegiance, the Northeast Texas Symphony will begin their performance.
“The best part of the evening is it is a free concert,” said Kayla Price, president of the Sulphur Springs Symphony League. “So, bring a lawn chair and your appetite.”
Leadership Sulphur Springs will be running a concession stand on the west side of the square that evening. Drinks, nachos, hotdogs, popcorn and cotton candy will be on the menu.
“This is a fundraiser for their program, so please support their efforts,” Price noted. “Additionally, several of the restaurants in the downtown area will stay open late that evening, including Bayou Jack’s, The Main Street Winery and Cork Room, Burger Grind, Coffee Off the Square, Lou Viney’s, Muddy Jakes and Plain & Fancy.”
According to Price, some of the restaurants “may have a limited menu,” so it’s a good idea to call ahead if you want to have dinner.
Dr. Doug Bakenhus, conductor of the Northeast Texas Symphony Orchestra, has designed a fun and entertaining program featuring patriotic and Broadway tunes.
“You will want to tap your toes, clap your hands, and sing along with many of the numbers,” Price advised. “Cheer on Mason Gillem, a Sulphur Springs sixth grader, as he leads the orchestra as guest conductor. Join in singing the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ being led by Kim Baxter. And, most importantly, express your appreciation to our veterans by attending this event and applauding them when their groups are recognized by the emcee.”
Following the concert, a fireworks display will light up the sky and it looks like Mother Nature is going to cooperate. Saturday’s forecast calls for a high of 88 degrees with only a 20 percent chance of rain.
Underwriting sponsors for this year’s performance are Alliance Bank, Grocery Supply and the Symphony League Auction.
To make a tax deductible contribution to the Sulphur Springs Symphony League, please mail a check to P.O. Box 251, Sulphur Springs Texas 75483.
