Happy belated Father’s Day to all the fathers out there. I can definitely say that Miller Grove has always had it’s share of great dads. I won’t single any out individually but looking back over the years there have been a lot of good, Godly, men in our community who have always been there for anyone and everyone in the area.
Without these men, Miller Grove would not be such a great place to have grown up.
As things slow down in the community I know my summer news columns will not be quite as long. The school fuels the majority of my writings and with it being summer I know that there will not be as much activity to report.
Miller Grove Volunteer Fire Department’s annual car show was this past weekend. I regret that I didn’t get up to the school parking lot to take a gander at all of the vintage automobiles that were being showcased. I did happen to pass by later in the day as everyone was packing up to leave.
I received an email from my friend Bettye (Stripling) Dunegan a while back and she told me that they are adding a new wall to the veteran’s memorial in Sulphur Springs and that three of the Stripling men of Miller Grove would have their names engraved on the new granite stone. The wall is entitled “Sacrifice” and will include the names of Luke Stripling, Aaron Stripling and Kenneth Stripling. Aaron and Luke (brothers) both served our country during World War II. Aaron was in the army while Luke was enlisted in the Air Force. Kenneth served over 20 years in the marine corps. While a soldier, he had two different tours during the Vietnam War.
Bettye also let me know that the annual Garmon reunion was set for June 28 in County Line’s Family Life Center.
Happy Birthday this week to Jenny (Oler) Holland and Quinn Glover on June 15, Micah Stotts and Kenny Scott on June 16, Ed Franks on June 17, Mary Lynn Ferguson on June 19, and Varrell Petty on June 21.
Happy 47th wedding anniversary to Billy and Carol (Akins) Dunn on June 17. Happy 12th anniversary to Patrick and Sherry (Ragan) Dial on June 21.
Corrections from last week’s column:
First correction: After reviewing Cole Burnett’s Facebook page, I noticed that I reported his daughter’s birth weight incorrectly at 9 pounds Addison’s true birth weight was 5 pounds. From what I can tell, it looks like Cole and his family are all doing well and enjoying their new addition to the family.
Second correction: in last week’s column I reported that Luke Brignon was valedictorian of the eighth grade class when actually Kaleigh Poteet that was this year’s junior high valedictorian. Luke introduced the speaker that night. I have now learned my lesson about writing my news column too late at night. I make way too many mistakes!
