Billy Jack Allen’s banana nut ice cream scooped the competition this year, winning top honors at Saturday’s Texas State Champion Ice Cream Freeze-Off which featured more than 60 entries. Allen went home with the $100 super scoop prize and an ice cream freezer.
Allen’s banana nut ice cream has been ranked among the top entries in the annual freeze-off for the last four years. It was rated first runner-up for the super scoop title in 2011 and 2013. This year and in 2012, his banana nut frozen treat was rated the best ice cream in the super scoop category, which pits previous first place winners against each other.
Mandy Eckhardt’s raspberry ice cream once again earned recognition too. The fruity dessert earned first place honors in the little dip fruit category in 2011 and first place in the big dip fruit category last year. This year, she was awarded the $50 prize for being the super scoop runner-up. She also earned first place in the little dips novelty category in 2012 with her chocolate chip cheesecake ice cream creation.
This year’s People’s Choice Award and $50 prize went to Jo Alice McCue’s banana pudding ice cream, which also was ranked second by a judge’s panel in the big dip novelty category at Saturday’s competition.
This also marks the second consecutive year McCue, sponsored by the Republican Women, has earned a first place big dip award. Last year, her chocolate ice cream won top honors in the big dip plain category. This year, McCue’s strawberry ice cream earned first place in the big dip fruit category and the $75 cash prize
In fact, all big dip fruit winners were strawberry ice cream entries. Melissa Fouse’s strawberry treat won second place honors and the $50 cash prize. Landon Dorner’s strawberry won third and $25. Dorner also won third place honors in the big dip fruit category in 2010 with his strawberry ice cream.
Top honors and the $75 first place prize in the big dip novelty category went to Henry Penson’s key lime cheesecake ice cream. This isn’t his first win either; his pecan pie ice cream was the 2010 super scoop champion and in 2012 won second place honors in the super scoop category.
Third place and the $25 prize in the big dip novelty category Saturday went to Wesley Fouse’s Oreo banana ice cream.
Top honors and the $75 first place prize in the big dip plain category this year went to Chris Allen’s chocolate ice cream, marking at least the second time his chocolate treat has won first place big dip plain honors; he first won in 2010.
Tony Cotton’s vanilla ice cream won second place honors in the big dip plain category and the $50 prize. Lindsey Fouse’s chocolate ice cream won the $25 cash prize and third place honors in the big dip plain category Saturday.
Both winners in the little dip novelty category featured peanut butter. Machelle Allen, for the second year in a row, earned top honors in the little dip novelty contest. This year, her peanut butter nut bar ice cream earned first place honors and the $20 prize; in 2013 she won first with her bananas Foster. In 2012, Allen’s first place chocolate won the little dips plain category.
Ann Marie Dorner’s peanut butter ice cream won the $20 prize and came in second at the 2014 little dops novelty contest, marking her second year to place at the freeze-off. Last year, Dorner’s peach ice cream won first place in the little dips fruit category.
First place in the little dip fruit category and the $20 prize went to Addison Bowers’ banana ice cream.
Both little dip plain winners were for vanilla ice cream. Mayara Mann won first place honors and $20. Britten Johnson won second place honors and $20.
