HUNTSVILLE — Former Winnsboro basketball standout Stacy Stephens has joined Sam Houston head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols’ women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach.
Stephens comes to Huntsville from the University of Texas at Austin where she has served as women’s basketball special assistant since 2012.
Nichols said. “Coach Stephens has worked as an assistant coach and played at the highest levels of the sport. That combined with her youthful attitude will bring so much to our Sam Houston program.”
Stephens helped the Longhorns to a berth in the 2003 NCAA Final Four and to two regular- season and one tournament championship in the Big 12 Conference. She finished her collegiate career as the third Longhorn to collect 1,000-plus points and 1,000-plus rebounds. She averaged 12.7 points and 9.1 rebounds during her Texas career.
Stephens was a third round WNBA draft pick for the Houston Comets in 2004 and she spent four years playing professionally in both the United States and overseas in Turkey, Sweden and Portugal.
She returned to Austin in 2012 where she coordinated day-to-day operations, assisted with year-round recruiting efforts and oversaw alumni relations.
