Sulphur Springs school board members had their work cut out for them during Monday evening’s executive session, working their way through nearly 40 proposed personnel changes. Overall, Sulphur Springs Independent School District Board of Trustees approved two summer contacts and four personnel changes, hired 26 new staff and accepted seven resignations at the conclusion of their regular meeting June 9.

James “Jim” Bayuk, who announced last month he plans to retire from Sulphur Springs Police Department, was hired to serve as a district-wide member of the SSISD Police Department.

Mary Robinson and Hollie Watson’s resignations as fourth grade teachers at Sulphur Springs Elementary were accepted. Kayla Bohannon and Alyssa Payne were hired to fill those openings.

Trustees accepted four resignations from SSMS staff, hired eight to fill openings  and approved a summer contract at SSMS. Resigning were science teacher Audra Latimer, band director Spencer Emmert, history teacher Tara Francis and art teacher Candace Pair.

New SSMS personnel will be Hayley Glenn and Bryan Cole, science teachers; Jeffery Garza, assistant band director; Jacob Alford and Lindsey Cipoletta, physical education teachers and coaches; Nathan Woodard, art teacher; Troiana Hoffman, math teacher; and Patty Isonhood, seventh grade English/language arts teacher.

Johnny McSheffery and Kayla Phillips, who were mid-term hires, were given summer contracts. McSheffery will work at SSMS. Phillips will also be transitioning from math mentor for both SSMS and Sulphur Springs High School to math teacher at SSHS.

From SSHS, the school board accepted Keith Cook’s resignation as math teacher and coach and approved 10 new hires. New SSHS staff include Carrie Bohman and Bonnie Grafton, math teachers; Brad Abell, health science technology teacher; John Luper, agriculture mechanics and welding teacher; Phillip Manning, social studies teacher and coach; Tony Martinez, head tennis coach; Katelyn Matthews, Elisha Ramos and Caitlyn Vaughn, special education aides; and James Payne, science teacher.

John Bimmerle, a technical specialist at SSHS, will move to the SSISD Administration Building to serve as instructional technology coordinator.

Mikki Daniel, who currently serves as a secretary at Bowie Primary, will be moving to the Administration Building to serve as PEIMS and curriculum secretary. Sara Tanton was hired to fill the secretary spot at Bowie Primary.

Bowie Primary School library and computer aide Abigail Godina will move to SSES, where she will be a special education aide. Also joining the staff at SSES will be Sofia Sosa, to serve as a Title I aide.

New personnel approved for Early Childhood Learning Center were Crystal Cervantes, to serve as a Head Start 3 aide; Heather Friddle, Head Start 3 teacher; and Cristina Munoz as a special education aide.

Rounding out the list of new personnel approved by trustees was Monica Graves. She was approved to teach fifth grade at Douglas Intermediate School.

Also during Monday night’s school board meeting, SSISD Assistant Superintendent Randy Reed noted that July 10 is the 45-day contract release date for resignation notifications.

“July 10 is the last day someone can resign and not violate the 45-day rule. July 10 is the last work day prior to the 45 days before kids report to instruction. The state says we don’t have to release them from contracts if they resign less than 45 days before school starts. If someone does resigns after and another qualified person comes in, we will try to work with them on that,” Reed noted.PEIMS and curriculum secretary.
