While Friday marked the start of summer vacation for many students and staff in Sulphur Springs, Tuesday heralded the start of another school term and numerous activities for some campuses.

Bilingual education and English as a second language classes for students entering kindergarten and first grade started June 10 and will continue from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. daily (noon if riding a bus), Monday through Thursday, through July 10, at Travis Primary School. The district is mandated to offer these services for approximately 36 students enrolled in the program, Sulphur Springs Independent School District Assistant Superintendent Betty Lawson noted Monday.

Also offered Monday through Thursday starting June 10 through July 10, is the summer child nutrition program. Any community child who is 18 years old or younger, regardless of whether they are an SSISD student, can stop by Travis Primary for a free breakfast or lunch. Breakfast is offered from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The daily menus are available for download by clicking the cafeteria menu on www.ssisd.net.

Travis and Sulphur Springs Middle School will hold STAAR Camp from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday, June 16-25. Travis will host fifth grade camp to help students prepare for the state test, while eighth graders prep at SSMS. Retests for those fifth and eighth graders still needing to pass the exams will be June 24-25 at the school where the camp is being conducted.

High school students needing to pass an end-of-course test will attend reviews Monday through Thursday, June 26 through July 3. Students will be notified of scheduled times for reviews. Then, Exit Level TAKS retesting will be conducted July 7-10, with STAAR EOC retesting July 7-11.

TAKS reviews will be held Monday-Thursday June 23-July 3 at Austin Academic Center for those students needing to pass one or more section of that test. Credit recovery will be offered Monday-Thursday, June 16-July 24 at Austin Academic Center.

Early Childhood Learning Center opened registration June 9 for Head Start 3- and 4-year-olds, prekindergarten and kindergarten students. Registration continues from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday until July 31.
