MG seniors receive $500K in scholarships

Miller Grove High School seniors received scholarships and military awards totaling about $500,000. Some awards were presented earlier this spring, and others announced at graduation Friday night.

The largest single award was presented to Nathan George. He was offered Annapolis Naval Academy appointment for $350,000 to enlist in the Navy or Marine Corps. George also was awarded a $750 Miller Grove Scholarship Fund award, a $1,000 Cumby Telephone Scholarship and 3 1⁄2 years of tuition to Tarleton State University, a value of about $2,310 per semester tuition for a total of about $16,170, according to current information available on the school’s website.

MGHS valedictorian Mark Allen was accepted into the Air Force and will apply for the ROTC Scholarship, valued at $18,000 per year, for a total of about $72,000 for four years of college.

Salutatorian Patrick Covington received at least $24,500 in scholarships. He was awarded the $500 Miller Grove Alumni Association scholarship, a $750 Miller Grove Scholarship Fund award, $1,000 Cumby Telephone Scholarship, $2,000 Alliance Bank Scholarship for four years, $750 Davis Street Baptist Church award, $750 Ernie Wilson Memorial Scholarship, $750 Tenaha Basketball Scholarship,  $1,000 Hopkins County D.A.R.E. Program Scholarship, $6,000 Academic Excellence Scholarship from Texas A&M University-Commerce, $3,000 per year Paris Junior College Presidential Scholarship and an $8,000 Midwestern State University Regents Scholarship.

Brandie McLane was awarded a $1,000 Cumby Telephone Scholarship, a Professional Land & Title Scholarship and a $750 Northeast Texas Livestock Association Scholarship.

Kaylan Bounds received a $500 Miller Grove Alumni Association award, $750 Miller Grove Scholarship Fund award and a $1,500 Stephen F. Austin University Scholarship.

Tyler Marler was awarded a $4,000 per semester scholarship, renewable for up to four years, from Texas A$M University-Texarkana.

Connor Hall was awarded about $16,500 in scholarships. Hall received a $500 Miller Grove Alumni Association scholarship, $250 Miller Grove PTO Scholarship, $750 Miller Grove Scholarship Fund award, $1,000 Cumby Telephone Scholarship and a $14,000 University of Texas-Permian Basin Merit Scholarship.

Alma DelCastillo received a $500 Miller Grove Alumni Association scholarship, $250 Miller Grove PTO Scholarship , a $750 Miller Grove Scholarship Fund award and a $700 Masonic Lodge of Cumby scholarship.

Shelbi Potts also went home with a $1,000 Cumby Telephone Scholarship.
