Funeral services for John Richard “J.R.” Nugent, 83, of Sulphur Bluff were held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 9, at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon with Bro. Pepper Puryear officiating and Dave Hickerson assisting.
Burial was at Centuries Memorial Park in Shreveport, La., with Jim Barnes, Glen Zachary, Jim Collett, Nat Paul Gibbs, Ken Swinford and Paul Fletcher serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Jack Henry Class and the Tabitha Class of First Baptist Church, Selah Inn Bible Study and the Sulphur Bluff Methodist Ladies Bingo.
The family received visitors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at the funeral home.
Mr. Nugent died Friday, June 6, 2014, at Sunny Springs Nursing Home.
He was born March 22, 1931, in Shreveport, La., to the late John David and Mirie McElwee Nugent.
He graduated from Fair Park High School in Shreveport in 1949, and attended Louisiana Tech.
He married Mary George Stone on July 5, 1953. She survives
Mr. Nugent was a structural engineer for E. L. Burns Co. in Shreveport, and later became the national sales representative for the Burns Co. He retired as a captain from the Louisiana National Guard. He moved to Texas in 1976 and became a rancher in the Sulphur Bluff community. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon.
Other survivors include daughter Georgia Ransone; sons David William Nugent and Carl Richard Nugent; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Marisa, Jared, John, Josh, Carla and Morgan; and 12 great-grandchildren.
