A routine traffic stop Wednesday morning netted nearly 200 pounds of marijuana and 2.5 pounds of cocaine and one felony arrest.

Sulphur Springs Police Lt. Jason Ricketson stopped a sport utility vehicle  on the north Interstate 30 service road near the 135 mile marker in Weaver for a traffic violation around 7 a.m. Wednesday. As he began walking toward the vehicle to make contact with the driver, Ricketson could smell an odor he recognized as marijuana.

Upon contact with the Tennessee man driving, the odor got stronger. During the stop and interview, the man confessed to possessing illicit substances. A search of the SUV revealed bags of marijuana and cocaine, not well packaged, under clothes and other items in the back portion of the SUV.

Ricketson took the 32-year-old Tennessee man into custody for possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. The drugs were seized as evidence and the man was taken to jail; his name had not been released late Wednesday morning as he had yet to be arraigned.

The substances were weighed. The weed weighed 193 pounds and the cocaine weighed 2.5 pounds or approximately 1.13 kilograms.
