I hope everyone had a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend.

At last Monday night’s school board meeting, there were several folks that were hired for the upcoming 2014-15 school year. Inge Heijligers was hired as a

Spanish teacher and Brandon McClure was hired to assume the teaching and shop duties of agriculture teacher. After Mr. Brian Jackson and Miss stephanie Lynch resigned only one Ag teacher will replace them. Davy Moseley (Miller Grove graduate) has been added to the staff in a new position as the technology coordinator. Other changes for the upcoming school year consist of the resignations of Kyle Smith (coach and math teacher) along with Mrs. “Tiny” Jones (fifth grade). It was also announced that Stacey McDonald would resume the teaching duties of pre-kindergarten and Lindsay Smith would move from pre-k into Stacey’s current position as kindergarten teacher. Another recently resignation was from the maintenance man, so the school will be looking for someone to fill his position very soon.

Speaking of the school, Friday was the End-of-School Stew. I took an extended lunch break and came and ate stew that day. There were only a few people from the community when I was there but I heard later that several others showed up to try some of Lewis Russell’s signature chicken stew. It was as good as usual.

Upcoming school events will be the Baccalaureate services which will be held on Sunday, June 1, at 6 p.m. in the Miller Grove Methodist Church. Graduation will be held in the high school gymnasium at 7 p.m. Friday, June 6. Wow, it seems like the school year has flown by!

Happy birthday to Bertha (Davis) Sparks on May 25; Bettie Garrett on May 26; Billy Lynn and JJace Potts on May 27; Macen Howle and Ryan Stracener on May 28; and Justin Scott, Jay Lynn Southerland and Kathy Lennon on May 29.

Happy seventh anniversary to my friend Derick Petty and his wife Karyn on May 26.
