The annual Classic Lanes Men's bowling tournament, sponsored by Winnsboro Livestock & Dairy Auction, was held April 5-13 with 120 men participating from the Sulphur Springs, Greenville, Dallas, Paris, and Waco areas.
The tournament consists of a five member team event, doubles event and singles event all of which included two divisions, division one containing bowlers with averages 200 and above and division two containing bowlers with averages 199 and below.
Taking Division one first place in the team event was Dave, rolling a 3589 combined handicap series. Dave Gholson, the team's captain, tossed a 689 set on games of 223, 242 and 223 on his 210 entering average. Allan Hague set the pace, as the team's leadoff bowler, nabbing an impressive 742 series with scores of 256 and 247. Corey Ogle, Neldon Smith and Mike Gilliland contributed games of 255, 227, a pair of 226 games, and a 216. The five man ensemble claimed the first place prize in the last day of competition by a mere 23 pins.
First place in division two went to Horton Hears A Strike, led by team captain Kevin Horton. Horton and his crew nabbed the gold with the tournament's high set of 3650 combined handicap pins. Kelly Shields unloaded on the competition with an astonishing 752 series on games of 279, 256 and 217 on his 201 entering average. Shields 279 during the first game of the afternoon included 11 of the 12 strikes needed for a perfect game. Horton charted scores of 211 and 222 in his 624 series, while Duwayne Benson rolled games of 213 and 225.
Gene Shelton captured games of 155 and 159 on his 151 average. Justin Parmer nailed a 258 during the last game to help insure the team's victory.
Sitting atop the dog pile in division two, for the doubles event, was the duo of Sisco Zarco and Allan Hague. Zarco carried the pair to first place on his games of 219 and 279 in an above average 670 series. Zarco, in his sophomore season at Classic Lanes compiled eleven of the twelve possible strikes in the last game of the set to catapult the men into first place by 39 pins.
Finishing first in division one for the second year in a row was Tarry Davison and Justin Parmer. The men finished the first weekend of the tournament with a commanding lead for first place and was able to retain the spot for the remainder of the event. The duo rolled the first 1500 series shot by a doubles team, competing in division one, in over four years with their 1506 set. Davison led the pair with his 712 series on his 230 entering average. Davison wasted no time getting right to work bagging a 243 to start the set. Davison followed with an outstanding 268, while Parmer tossed games of 235, 256 and 207 on his 194 entering average.
Brandon Broadway, of Paris, snuck away with first place in the division one singles event, after shooting a 776 series during the first weekend of competition. Broadway rolled games of 226, 249 and 247 edging out his second place opponent by nine pins.
Cole Smallwood, also of Paris, nabbed first place in the second division of singles competition, after firing a 763 handicap set. Smallwood started the afternoon slow with a 160 for his first game, but was able to regroup and shoot scores of 201 and 255 to close out the series. Smallwood, competing on a 175 entering average, was able clinch first place in the division two singles event in his first attempt here at Classic Lanes.
