AUSTIN – The day before Mother’s Day, Miller Grove senior Nathan George got himself a nice piece of jewelry.
George, who ran three races on Saturday at the UIL State Track and Field Meet, brought home a silver medal after finishing second in the Class A, Div. II 800-meter run.
Both he and the winner, Kade Cowan of Buckholts, broke the existing class meet record. Cowan won in a time of 1 minute, 55.40 seconds, while George was second in 1:56.53.
Cowan was the defending state champion, while George finished fourth in the race last year.
“I just knew that I needed to run my race,” George said. “I knew the defending state champion was back. I just wanted to run my best time and see where it took me.”
He did run his best time. Meanwhile, teammate Logan Miller, who had placed fourth in the 3,200-meter run the day before, finished ninth in the 800-meter race in a time of 2:07.72
George fell in behind Cowan on the first backstraight of the two-lap race and was in second place after the first lap, which he ran in 55 seconds. The two stayed in that position for the remainder of the race.
“My goal coming in was to win, but I am definitely happy with my time,” George said. “Our goal is always to win, but I like to break my own record and set the bar higher for myself.”
George also ran in the 1,600-meter run along with Saltillo’s Dakota Carroll, as they finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
The pair settled into the middle of the nine-runner pack on the first lap, with George crossing the first lap in third at 66 seconds and Carroll in fifth at 68. After the second lap, George was in fifth and Carroll in sixth as they both crossed at the 2:21 mark. On the third lap, they each moved up on spot into fourth and fifth, in 3:32.
But, on the final lap, the top three runners – led by champion Jesse Roberts of Sanderson – pulled away on the 90-degree day.
Roberts won the race in 4:35.18, while George finished in fifth at 4:48.33 and Carroll was sixth in 4:52.11.
The final event was the 4x400 relay in which George and Miller teamed with Trey Lester and Brennan Green. The foursome though, could never get into the mix as they finished in ninth place at 3:45.57.
Though the relay team didn’t place, Miller Grove had a successful state meet experience with four athletes competing in four different events.
