AUSTIN — Garrett Landers of Sulphur Springs fired a 10-over par 81 during the first round of play at the UIL state golf tournament. Play for Class 4A is being held at the University of Texas Club course.
Landers is 43rd from a field of more than 70 golfers from throughout the state. The current leader is Scottie Scheffler of Highland Park with a 66. The 4A leading team is Austin Vandergrift with a 291.
The final round of the tournament will be played today.
“Garrett is about in the middle of the pack, if he shoots par (71) or close to it, he could really move up in the standings,” said Ross Funk, SSHS head golf coach. “Garrett had a good start, then had some tough holes. The 81 was unlike Garrett, his stroke average is about 73 to 74. The conditions were tough, it was a six-hour round. It was very windy. Also several times play had to be stopped for a ruling on the course. He’s prepared now about what to expect and excited about playing today. It’s been very windy and the course has elevation changes. But he’s anxious to play today and close out with a good score.”
It is the first state golf tournament appearance for Landers, a junior at Sulphur Springs High School.
