Happy belated Easter to everyone! From all accounts I think everyone in our area had a good Easter — well, from what I could see on Facebook anyway! I got to spend the afternoon with my brother’s family. They all came over for Easter supper. We had a good meal and I enjoyed getting to play with my niece and nephews.

Friday I was off of work for Good Friday and was able to eat lunch with my niece Savanna, who is in pre-kindergarten at Miller Grove Independent School District. We had bacon chicken ranch subs and they were really good. Later that day I helped my cousin, Miranda Frobish, change the oil in her truck. So, it was a good and productive day off for me.

The latest news around MG school is the “pig kissing” that went on Friday, April 18. Yes, I said pig kissing. Junior high/high school students competed against elementary students to see which group could raise the most money for the Pennies for Patients fundraiser. The jr/high school had a goal of $500 and if met, they would get to see their teachers kiss a live pig. The fun didn’t just stop with the secondary teachers puckering up, it even traveled to administration. Mrs. Kim Irby (principal) and Mr. Steve Johnson (superintendent) gave the pig a little smooch. Together, the entire campus raised a total of $1,352.11 for the worthy cause. MGHS’ National Honor Society will give the two top money raising classes a pizza party for their hard work. MG School has participated in the fundraiser from time to time but I’m not sure if they have ever raised this much money to benefit cancer research.

Happy birthday this week to Quinten Stovall and Virgil McEnturff on April 21, Anna Letha Ferguson on April 24, and my niece Savanna Darrow and Derick Petty on April 25.

A very special birthday wish this week goes out to my cousin, Mary Lou (Ferguson) Akins. Mary Lou will be celebrating her 90th birthday on April 26. She is someone to be admired. Mary Lou has always worked hard, been a good Christian woman, loved her family, and is a friend to any and everyone in the community. She has always been a special cousin to me and I hope that she has a great day on her birthday this milestone year!
