A Cumby High School student is one of two Northeast Texas students to advance from the regional bee to the State Citizen Bee.

Landon Mabe, son of Holden Killian and Kathryn Killian, was one among only three students to place at the Regional Citizen Bee held April 9 at the Region 8 Education

Service Center. The Cumby High School student came in second behind Chapel Hill High’s Dario Ugalde, and just ahead of Chapel Hill High’s Johnathan Ramirez, who finished third.

Students from six Northeast Texas high schools competed in the Regional Citizen Bee held April 9.

The Citizen Bee is a civic education program and academic competition with questions about the Constitution, historical documents, historical people, landmark Supreme Court Cases, civic values and skills, and current events. The event is designed to stimulate greater understanding of American heritage and the issues facing the United States. The Citizen Bee includes a 30-minute written examination followed by four rounds of oral questions.

Written and oral questions were provided by the Law-Related Education Department.

The first and second place winners will advance to the State Citizen Bee to be held on April 26 in Austin.
