CUMBY — The North Hopkins Lady Panthers struck for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to roar past Cumby 11-8 in District 16-A softball action Thursday afternoon.
Baile Gammille had three hits, scoring four times and stealing seven bases with Chelsey Crouch powering a double and a triple. Sheyenne Mitchell and Aliyah French each added two hits for the Lady Panthers.
North Hopkins took a 1-0 first inning lead but Cumby scored five times in the bottom of the second to lead 5-1. North Hopkins chipped away finally taking a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning. The Lady Panthers then got five straight hits in the top of the seventh inning leading to the six-run outburst. they them held on as Cumby fought back scoring three runs before getting the final out on a ground out to second. Crouch got the win on the mound in relief of Mitchell. Mitchell and Crouch combined to hold the Lady Trojans to five hits and recorded six strike-outs. The Lady Panthers slugged out 13 hits i the game.
“It was an important win for us to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot," Lady Panther head coach Kaylee Wood commented. “Hopefully we will continue to work hard at practice and get better going into the final two games against Saltillo and Sulphur Bluff.”
The District 16-A standings are led by undefeated Sulphur Bluff (6-0) followed by Saltillo (4-2) and North Hopkins (4-2).
