Sulphur Springs High School Fine Arts Director Charles McCauley directs the Sulphur Springs High School Symphonic Band in front of a standing-room only crowd during the band’s annual pre-UIL competition concert Tuesday evening in the band hall. The SSHS concert band, which includes junior varsity musicians, will compete Thursday, April 10, at Mount Pleasant High School, beginning at 2:15 p.m., followed by the symphonic band’s performance at 3:20 p.m. This year’s symphonic band program includes Kenneth Alford’s “HM Jollies March,” “Earth Song” by Frank T. Ticheli and “Themes from Green Bushes” by Percy Grainger, arranged by Larry Dan. “The music [we’ve chosen] is very technical. It’s a good variety and it’s been really challenging for the kids. They have worked hard. They will rise to the occasion,” McCauley said.
