BIRTHRIGHT – North Hopkins’ hurler Silas Whaley tossed a no-hitter Tuesday, stricking out 10 Roxton batters in an 18-1 mercy rule win for the Panthers to up their district slate to 7-0.
Whaley also was 2-3 at the plate with two runs-batted-in, two runs scored and five stolen bases. Roxton's only run came in the top of the first inning when the lead-off batter walked, got to second on a passed ball and would score on an error at third on a pick-off attempt.
The Panthers took a 4-1 lead after batting in the first inning and held that lead until the third inning when they exploded for eight runs to take a commanding 12-1 advantage.
Blake Adams, Rheston Sills (a double) and Clay Bearden each had hits to aid the offensive output. Sills and Bearden each added two RBIs for the Panthers.
The Panthers scored six more runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to finish their scoring for the day and gain the victory. Whaley ended the game striking out two of the final three Lions. The win gives Whaley a perfect 4-0 record in district play.
North Hopkins will host Fannindel Friday and Cayuga for a doubleheader on Saturday.
