North Hopkins High School earned third place out of 14 schools competing in the District 17-1A Academic UIL Meet held Monday, March 26, in Blue Ridge. Forty-four NH students participated, with 12 students earning metals and four students qualifying to compete in five events at the regional academic UIL meet May 2-3 at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. Students were especially successful in writing, speaking and calculator events.
One outstanding sophomore not only placed in two different writing events, but went home with top honors in each. Allegra Thomas earned first place medals in ready writing and feature writing and is advancing to region in both.
Senior Selena Santana is advancing to region with her first place win in news writing.
Sophomores Abreeanna Bisenius and Michael Condo are both advancing to region in Lincoln-Douglas debate. Condo won second place honors and Bisenius third place honors in LD debate at district. Also placing in LD, but not advancing was senior Blake Adams, who placed fourth.
One team and three other individuals also placed at the district meet, albeit not high enough to advance to region.
The second place calculator application team included sophomore Veronica Ugalde and juniors Mauricio Gamez, Ashley Garcia and Raven Sims.
Senior Alan Morehead was recognized for his fourth place finish in poetry. Recognized for their sixth place finishes were freshman Victoria Wilburn in prose and junior Denise Franco in informative speaking.
Other NHHS students participating in the district UIL meet this week and contributing to the school’s overall third place finish school ranking included seniors Tarence Berry, Kelsey Buchanan, Denise Calixto, Chelsey Crouch, Trenton Dodd, Stephanie Gamez, Chelsea Houser, Jeron Leber, Jovanny Perez, Faith Schwen, Silas Whaley, Elizabeth Wilburn and Jessie Williams; juniors Seth Baker, Miriam Castro, Marlee Minton and Sarah Weatheread; sophomores Katerine Flores, Baile Gammill, Geraldine Lopez, Nathan Olavide, Mason Virgel and Clint Williams; and freshmen Mary Brown, Cheyanne Cockrum, Allyiah French, Christiam Matlock, Sheyenne Mitchell, Colton Ross, Aaron Stanley and Hollie Stidham.
The competitors were accompanied by NHHS District UIL Coordinator Donna Brown, NHHS Principal Rob Stanley and event coaches Paulan Cowling, Danna Lewis and Janis Thomas.
