BIRTHRIGHT — The North Hopkins Panthers staged a dramatic four-run inning in the bottom of the seventh to claim an 8-7 victory over Dallas Covenant last Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader. Covenant came back to win the second contest 15-10.
In the opener, the Panthers built a 4-1 lead behind the pitching of Kevin Meza who gave up just two hits and stuck out eleven in just over four innings of work. Austin Oldham took over for Meza and finished the game. Covenant took a 7-4 lead after the top of the seventh innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cole Sprague led off with a single and later scored on a passed ball. Allen Morehead also walked and scored on a passed ball. Javier Rojo walked and Austin Oldham got a single to put runners on second and third after two Panthers had struck out. Alfredo Orozco stepped up the plat sand slashed a line drive single to centerfield scoring both runners giving the victory to the Panthers.
In the second game, Covenant stormed to a 12-1 lead until the Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 12-4 game. Covenant extended their lead to 15-7 going into the final Panther at bat. Clay Bearden blasted a three-run shot over the left center fence to bring the score to the final 15-10.
The Panthers are now 7-3 for the season.
They will play Fannindel at home Friday at 4:40 p.m. followed by a doubleheader at home with Cayuga on Saturday.
