Sulphur Springs saw their late scoring rally come up short, losing a home, 6-5 to Mount Pleasant.
The Lady Cats, recently listed in the Top 20 in the state, suffered their first district defeat of the year.
Four errors by the Lady Cats helped the Mount Pleasant cause as the Lady Tigers scored six total runs in the game.
The contest was scoreless through the first four frames.
Mount Pleasant pushed across three runs in the top of the fifth. The Lady Tigers added one more in the sixth and two in the seventh.
The Lady Cats scored all five runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Kiara Johnson had two hits, three runs knocked in with a home run.
Molly Johnston had a double and one run knocked in. Kasey Moore also clubbed a double. Mary Lopez had two hits with one RBI. Sierra Nickerson added a single for the Lady Cats and a stolen base.
The Lady Cats had seven hits in the losing cause as they dropped to 15-5-1, 2-1.
Breanne Smallwood was the winning pitcher for Mount Plesant with a complete game effort. She allowed five runs, all earned, walking two and fanning 13. She threw 125 pitches, 88 for strikes.
Katie Sapaugh of Sulphur Springs was the losing pitcher. She pitched seven innings, allowing six runs (one earned) off seven hits, no walks and striking out 11. Sapaugh threw 122 pitches, 86 strikes.
“We faced a setback last night but it is an opportunity to learn. I was proud of the way we battled back but we just made too many mistakes offensively and defensively. I feel like we have a team that will bounce back and learn from this,” said David Carrillo, Lady Cats head softball coach.
Sulphur Springs will play at Texas High Friday night.
