A 2 1/2 year-old was found floating in a pond in front of his County Road 4735 residence Friday morning. He was pronounced dead at the hospital by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Ronny Glossup, who has ordered an autopsy, as is standard procedure in these types of deaths.
“At this time we don’t suspect foul play. There is no sign of foul play, pending the results of the autopsy. The district attorney’s office and Texas Ranger are aware of the situation,” Hopkins County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Lewis Tatum said Saturday morning.
Based on a preliminary investigation Friday morning, sheriff’s investigators said it appears the little boy wandered away from the house unnoticed. The child’s parents had gone to town, leaving their younger son, who was two years and five months old, in the care of their teenage son.
A neighbor passing by found him floating in the pond. The older sibling was alerted.
“They pulled him out and started CPR. The parents arrived and continued CPR until emergency officials arrived on scene,” Tatum said.
The boy was transported by Hopkins County Emergency Medical Services in an ambulance to the emergency room at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by Glossup.
