The AFI (American Film Institute) recently revealed its 10 Top 10 movies, in other words the top 10 movies in 10 different categories. You could say I disagreed somewhat with their list.
That's not to say the AFI's list wasn't great -- and in fact their list is much better than mine when it comes to classics -- but the AFI tended to lean toward older movies, which aren't necessarily my taste. Of their top 100, almost half are at least 50 years old.
I, on the other hand, found myself drawn to newer movies. I also found that instead of 10 categories (animation, romantic comedies, western, sports, mystery, fantasy, sci-fi, gangster, courtroom drama and epic), I had to add three more categories: comedies, drama and horror.
To that end, here are my top 10 epic movies (whatever the definition for epic is):
1. Saving Private Ryan (the best movie ever made)
2. The Alamo (as a Texan, I might be biased)
3. Gone With the Wind
5. Forrest Gump
7. The Passion of the Christ
9. The Ten Commandments
10. The Great Escape
(Here is the AFI's Top 10: 1. Lawrence of Arabia; 2. Ben-Hur; 3. Schindler's List; 4. Gone With the Wind; 5. Spartacus; 6. Titanic; 7. All Quiet on the Western Front; 8. Saving Private Ryan; 9. Reds; 10. The Ten Commandments.
