Where Does the Time Go?
The Hopkins County Dairy Festival Board is just as surprised as you are that it is already time to begin our preparations for the 2014 Festival! We have received many inquiries from interested participants - from the parade, to the balloons, and of course, from candidates for the Pageant. The dates are June 13-21. Our Board President, David Watson, will host the opening ceremony on Friday, June 13, at 12 noon at Guaranty Bond Bank.
The first flight of the Hot Air Balloons will be from Shannon Oaks Church, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, June 13. David and Pam Black, are the chairmen for all hot air balloon activities that first weekend. The balloons (as we fondly call them: The Dairy-Aires) will be flying Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14, at dawn and dusk, from the grounds of Shannon Oaks Church (weather permitting). Last year we had 28 balloons participating, and hope to increase that number for this year! Come see those gorgeous balloons and be part of the fun! All Balloon activities are free and open to the public; as are all Festival activities! Where else could you see young ladies on handmade floats, who later will be milking real cows, as well as their parents? Then that same day view hot air balloons and taste homemade ice cream from as many as 100 entries? Please visit our website: www.hopkinscountydairyfestival.com and click on schedule of events.
And get your creative juices flowing as to what your float for the Parade will look like to represent our theme this year: “Churning Back Time … Moooving Through The Years.” The parade, with reigning queen Miss Kennedy Potts on her regal float, leaves Buford Park on Saturday, June14, at 10 a.m. The candidates for Dairy Festival Queen each year and the “Little Kids” always create imaginative floats, highlighting the Festival’s theme If you want your “Little Kid” (boys and girls, ages 3-5) to be a part of the parade and pageant, please contact Missy Caddell at 903-438-6381. Any organization, commercial enterprise or community group is welcome to enter a decorated float. For parade information and registration, contact David Watson at 903-439-5020 or through the website: www.hopkinscountydairyfestival.com.
Any young lady who is a Junior in a Hopkins County school may apply for consideration to be in this year’s Festival. If interested, please contact Cindy Lancaster at 903-438-1620 or Gena Prickette at 903-243-4534 to receive the application packet. Only 12 spots are available for contestants. The 2014 Coronation Pageant is on Saturday, June 21, at 7 p.m. in Hopkins County Regional Civic Center Auditorium.
The parents’ and candidates’ reception will be at the Southwest Dairy Museum on March 17. This will be an opportunity for contestants and parents to learn about the activities and responsibilities of being a candidate for the title of Dairy Festival Queen 2014 and to ask any questions of the Board of Directors. We have many talented and experienced board members who can help any potential candidate to develop a talent presentation for the pageant.
The Hopkins County Dairy Festival is a tradition of 55 years and includes hot air balloons, a huge parade, a milking contest, a dairy foods contest, a 5K Milk Run, the NETLA Jr. Dairy Show, a carnival and the coronation pageant. We also have the Texas Championship Ice Cream Freeze Off on Saturday, June 14, at 4 p.m. sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. These are all much-looked-forward-to and not-to-be-missed annual County events, so mark your calendars now!
