SALTILLO — The Saltillo Lions play Roxton at 7 p.m. in Prairiland Monday for the bi-district title for Class 1A Division II.
“Roxton is a very good team we played them on the Jan. 2, and they beat us by about 15 points. They play multiple defenses. Their man-to-man, I think, is their best one though. They are an offensive team that likes to shoot the three and push the ball every chance they can,” said Garry Davison, Saltillo basketball coach and athletic director.
The Lions will have experience on their side with seniors Nolan Garmon, Chase Carr, Maikel Groenewold, and Chris Richey taking the court tonight.
Saltillo has a mark of 6-16. “We haven't had the season we wanted, but we are in the playoffs and anything can happen,” coached added positively.
The Lions have been the district champions for the last two years, headed by coach David Murphy for the last three years. Murphy brings over 50 years of teaching and coaching wisdom to the floor.
The winner of tonight’s contest will take on the 2008 State Champion Laneville Yellowjackets. The Yellowjackets (have a bye in this year’s first round of the playoffs) have been a thorn in the side of the Lions for the last two years. Two years ago, Laneville was the state runner-up.
