As many as three people may have died when two trucks collided head-on on State Highway 24 about a mile and a half south of Cooper near the intersection with Delta County Road 2000.
The crash occurred around 7:30 a.m., according to Delta County Sheriff's Investigator Charles Hereford, who was among the first officers on the scene.
“We do know it was an 18-wheeler, a tanker trailer with some kind of fuel or flammable material in it, and some kind of 1-ton service truck” Hereford said. “It was a head-on collision and both vehicles were fully engulfed when we got there.”
Hereford said as many as three people may have died in the crash but that number would not be confirmed until the wreckage could be cooled down.
“They called in Commerce Fire Department to put out the fire in the service truck and they called a truck from L-3 in Greenville to put out the tanker truck,” Hereford said.
The crash and fire prompted the closure of SH 24 between Cooper and Commerce and, Hereford said the road would remain closed for most of the day.
