The last preseason soccer game could not have turned out better for Sulphur Springs.

Not only did they get a 1-0 win over a talented Pleasant Grove squad, but they bolstered their confidence heading into district soccer play Monday.

“We played well. We were definitely on the attack the whole night. The girls played hard and never gave up,” SSHS soccer coach Joel Bailey said. The lone goal in the game came by the Lady Cats when Abby Grand-Lienard took a crossing pass from Karlie Junot and put the ball in the net at the 23:45 mark of the second half. The visiting Lady Hawks only had a handful of scoring chances in the game, the final one missed the mark in the wanning seconds as Sulphur Springs claimed the 1-0 win.

In the first half, the Lady Cats peppered shots at the Pleasant Grove goal. Bonnie Grafton missed two early tries while Brittany Lamphere and Junot were also narrowly off the mark.

Macy Hurley, the goalkeeper for the Lady Cats, made a nice save at the 21:40 mark of the first half. Sulphur Springs had five other shots on goal in the first half, some missed by feet as the first half ended in a scoreless tie.

The eighth try on goal in the second half was the charm with Grand-Lienard finding the net. Sulphur Springs held on and took the 1-0 win to advance their record to 6-5-2.

“We had plenty of chances to score. Some of our shots just missed by a foot right of left,” Bailey said.

The coach continued, “Abby had a nice goal and Karlie is a go-getter and plays with a lot of energy. Melissa Phillips played an outstanding game on defense.”

The team opens district play in Greenville Monday with the JV game at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.
