Since 1955, Hopkins County United Way has provided a clearinghouse for the area’s helping agencies. This year, their goal is $150K which will be distributed to 17 agencies.
In these tough economic times, resources are stretched to the limit, but please find a way to help HCUW reach their goal.

Check out the 7th Annual John Chester Dutch Oven Cook-Off on Saturday at Heritage Park. The food disappears quickly, so get there around 11 a.m. to make sure you get a taste of everything.

The Hopkins County Genealogical Society is sponsoring a City Cemetery Walk on Sunday, Oct. 2. Local historian John Sellers will lead the tour.  Take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about the History of Hopkins County. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children.

The Second Annual Sulphur Springs Photo Walk will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. Local shutterbugs will meet at Plain ‘n Fancy Sandwich Shoppe. News-Telegram photographer Luis Noble will be one of the leaders, so you know it will be a ton of fun.

Some good men are leaving public service. The good news is that others are stepping up to take their place. It takes a real tough hide to run for office these days. No matter your political preference, we’re lucky to have people who want to serve others.

Johanna Hicks is offering a multi-week seminar on living with diabetes. Hicks has become something of an expert on the disease, so this is an opportunity to learn from one of the best.

The world-famous Hopkins County Stew Contest is set for Saturday, Oct. 22. Hopefully, Mother Nature will continue the cooling trend and put us all in the mood for a steaming bowl of goodness.

The Pilot Club’s big Alzheimer’s walk is set for Oct. 20, but several groups are hosting “mini-walks” all over town. Alzheimer’s is a hateful disease that takes our loved ones long before their time. Please mark your calendar and support the walks.

There’s something good here . . .
Mother’s Culture Club will be sponsoring a 5K Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. This year, they’ll benefit Hope4Harper, but they plan on making the run an annual event to benefit several of their charities. Watch the News-Telegram for more details.
