We hear enough bad news on TV. This column is meant to spotlight the positive things in our lives. Recognize the good around you. Share a smile. Speak a kind word. It might be your turn to need encouragement one day.

There’s something good here . . .
Two friends celebrating their “same day” birthday decide against gifts. They ask their guests to bring items they know are needed for missionaries. These are two 11-year-old boys we’re talking about. Way to go, Nathan Frye and Shaden Burton. Check out this weekend’s Variety for more on these good kids.

Yantis’ UIL team wins their first district championship in history. It took a lot of hard work and determination, but these kids pulled it off.

A dozen local restaurants are donating their time and talent to help out the Boy Scouts. The Scouts are always helping out when there is a need. It’s nice to see others lending a hand to them.

The city of Cumby has something to celebrate. A lot of volunteers helped renovate the city park. In addition to their sweat equity, citizens and businesses donated the dollars to make this happen. Check out the park and participate in all the events during Blackjack Grove Day on Saturday, May 14.

For the past 14 years, the Yantis Masons have hosted an all-you-can-eat fish fry, raising funds for scholarships. The event is Saturday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m at the Community Center. Go. Eat. Help a kid go to college. It’s the right thing to do.

The Relay for Life movement is alive and well in Hopkins County. It seems everyone is involved in raising funds to fight cancer. When people in this county makes a commitment, they stick to it.

The good citizens of Pickton are helping one of their own who is battling cancer. This is what life in a small town is all about – coming to the aid of neighbors when trouble comes a’knocking.

The girls of the Hi King Klub spent the better part of a year raising money for good causes like Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and Project Graduation Celebration. Not only do the causes get a financial boost, the HKK girls learn valuable lessons in the importance of giving back.

There’s something good here . . .
Several Sulphur Springs residents made the trip to Commerce last night to tour TAMU’s new music building. The facility is world-class. “This room was built for sound,” said Chris White, head of the music department, as he proudly showed us the finer points of the Finney Concert Hall. If you have the chance to see a performance, take it. The space is amazing.
