While I love the holidays and all their activities, sometimes the hustle and bustle overwhelms my aging brain, and sends me searching for a quiet place.

Jazz singer Cassandra Wilson's new CD, "Silver Pony" offers soul-soothing melodies laid down during Wilson's live performances in Europe.

Her cover of "A Day in the Life of a Fool" should be the gold standard for the Lennon/McCartney tune. Seriously.

She and her band shine on "Blackbird," too.

"Saddle Up My Pony" is Wilson's tribute to Delta Blues great Charlie Patton. While it's the blues, to be sure, Wilson and the boys give it a mellow spin.

Check upcoming editions of your News-Telegram for a review of "Silver Pony." It would be the perfect Christmas present for the jazz lover in your life.

Here's a clip of Wilson covering Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey," from her 1993 CD "Blue Lights 'til Dawn." Sit down. Let your mind wind down. Get a cup of hot tea or warm wine. Then, allow Wilson's talent flow over you.
