Oklahoma native Verlon Thompson’s sitting on top of the country music world these days.

Thompson’s hit, “Bad Angel,” is at the top of the charts, thanks to Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert and Jamey Johnson. His “Ballad of Stringbean and Estelle” was nominated for the Song of the Year at this year’s International Bluegrass Music Awards.

Thompson has toured with Guy Clark for several years. The two recently played to a sold-out crowd at Music City Texas in Linden. When Clark took a break, Thompson entertained the audience with a rousing rendition of his tune, "Joe Walker's Mare," then mesmerized everyone with "The Ballad of Stringbean and Estelle."

I'm set to interview Thompson and will talk to him about growing up in Binger, writing tunes for Jimmy Buffett, Alan Jackson and Trisha Yearwood and what it’s like to travel the world with the legendary Guy Clark.

Check out my feature on the quiet, gentle and supremely talented Thompson in an upcoming edition of your News-Telegram.
