After waiting and wondering, Sulphur Springs did it.They won the Class 4A, Division II state football title and it could not taste sweeter.
Nobody in the state has worked harder than this team and their coaches.
The team changed during the year from just team which could score points, to a total team. They always had the ability for a quick strike touchdown, but they added improvements to their defense and soon learned to win.
The season ended with a nine-game winning streak. As it turns out now the losses in district to Longview and Texas High were very pivotal in the development and psyche of this team.
They had been beat, they knew what a nasty taste it was, they did not want to experience it again, and they didn't.
The Wildcats lost on Oct. 10 at Texarkana and went through November and December without a mark on their record.
The result, a record-setting 14-2 mark, state title and it all gets better from here on out.
State UIL medals will be handed out, championship rings will be ordered, heck, even a parade is planned Jan. 5 for the conquering champions.
My first taste of Sulphur Springs football has made a lasting impression on me. I am a believer.
When you get a special group of people together, all focused on the same goal, something special can be accomplished.
I was on the ride with them and it felt good.
