Sulphur Springs has been playing football for 95 years, but never have the Wildcats played in a game of the magnitude they will face on Saturday in the Class 4A, Div. II state championship against the Dayton Broncos. Not only is this the fartherest that the football team has gone in the playoffs, it is the best season in any sport in SSHS history.Sulphur Springs has never won a team championship in any sport, and for most of the 95 years that the Wildcats have played football, winning a state championship was nothing more than a pipe dream.
SSHS head coach Greg Owens says the basis for this year's team was laid before the players were born. It goes back to 1979 when Don Poe (who Owens played under) established Sulphur Springs as a winning program. James Cameron and Chuck King took the Wildcats to the status of being state recognized and producing Div. I college prospects. Now, Owens and his staff have taken them one step farther -- hopefully it is the final step.
