Little Thomas Voeckler won the stage yesterday on a very brave breakaway (when a rider or a small group of riders leave the peleton - all the riders - to try and make it on their own). Love this little racer. He wore the yellow jersey for something like 10 days in 2004 until Lance took it away from him in the mountains. NO ONE expected him to stay in yellow so long, but he turned himself inside out to keep it and endeared himself to cyclists everywhere. Something magical really does happen when that yellow jersey goes on to your shoulders.
They're in a mess today. Rain and wind ... and remember, these guys are screaming down the road ... and they don't weigh enough, even wringing wet, to stay vertical. Several crashes and a lot of flatting (tires) have taken their toll.
I just heard on VeloNews that my other favorite - Jimmy Buffett - is riding in the team Astana car today with team manager Johan Bruyneel. Mr. Margaritaville likes biking almost as much as surfing!
Here is the direct link to the interview:
I don't expect a change in leadership today ... not with the rain and wind.
Right now, because of the way Astana smoked everyone in the Team Time Trial, 4 of Lance's guys are in the top 5 and there's another one sitting at 7th, I think.
I don't look for a change in things until the mountains UNLESS Lance gets tucked into a small breakaway like Tuesday and gains a few seconds on Cancellara (whom I really like) or Cancellara crashes or blows up (which would be very rare).
TTFN. Gotta get a paper out.
