I in my life have had few dealings with Lawyers. But the few times were not positive experiences. So I tend to have a general mistrust of lawyers. My thought is that while they are one of those necessary evils, they tend to dwell in the negative aspects of humanity.
Erwin Cain is running for Texas Representative. I have had several people tell me that is is pretty upstanding, so I contacted him through his web site.
Here are parts of the conversation. You judge for yourself.
(Me)But for me to support you, how do I overcome my thoughts that as the lawyers that have infiltrated state and federal politics and got us in the dire mess the State and Country are in. How can I overcome the thought you are a Lawyer like the others. After all Obama is a Lawyer as well as the Clinton's and many many others.
How are you going to be different, get among all the other lawyers and not catch whatever fever that is changing politics and our way of life.
Are you going to end up being part of the solution or the problem.
That question is for you to ask yourself in the mirror.
People like me are so tired of the campaign speeches, and the hollow promises. Rick Perry has a great speech, being groomed for a possible presidential bid, yet we Texans have to deal with the out of control state spending, the cronies, poor education system, more and more toll roads despite all the taxes we pay. Where does it stop?
What are you going to be like AFTER you take the oath?
This is his response.
I don’t think we have ever met and you don’t know me. All I can do is share with you my convictions. You decide whether I am the right man for the job.
I know there have been a lot of concerns (and some legitimately) about lawyers in the legislature. I have that concern about a lot of legislators, many of whom are not lawyers. Please consider this. The fact that someone is a lawyer does not make him corrupt. It is not the training, it is the character we must evaluate. There are those who have high integrity in all professions. There are also dishonest businessmen, doctors, and CPAs who are in the legislature. Would you rather have as your legislator an attorney with high integrity or a corrupt businessman or doctor? And who better to fight questionable lawyers than with an honest one?
I strive to be sincere, truthful and exercise strong conservative convictions. So you know, I am a first and foremost a business man. I have a degree in business. I have owned my own law firm for over 16 years. I also own a real estate investment co. I know what it’s like to have to make pay roll and even forgo a salary to do so, pay quarterly and yearly taxes, and struggle with business development and client retention. I know the burden of ever growing bureaucratic red tape and want to see it streamlined.
The bottom line is, I am intent on championing our conservative values and free enterprise. If, after you see my record in the legislature, I am not doing so, then please don’t vote for me again.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me.

I must say there are bad apples in every barrel. Just as there are bad mechanics, I know that I am honest and have little control over the others.
So is true of Erwin Cain as a lawyer. It is unfair to lump him with the bunch until we see for ourselves. I like his response to what I wrote him, I was a bit harsh with him but I wanted to see his response.
So in keeping with my idea of voting out every incumbent.
I think that Mr. Cain is worth of giving a chance. As he said it he does not serve us well, we can vote him out as well.
