Lots of Action 7 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 5
Just wanted to drop this note into the forums. According to the local chatter, there is lots of action going on in the restaurant game in Sulphur Springs. A couple of places may be leaving, but there are a couple coming in too --- IHop may have been just the beginning.

Stay tuned!

I know about The Swamp Pot on the square and Sweet Frog (Frozen Yogurt) going into 1/2 (according to chatter) of the old Pet Sense building. I've not heard of any other places going in. I've not heard of places leaving, either...curious about this one.

Nothing is confirmed yet STG ... though one new restaurant is pretty close to confirmed. Another (actually would be a replacement) is still early to call a sure thing. I'll be back if I hear more.

Scott - how will the two alcohol propositions on the upcoming ballot affect restaurant attraction/retention? From what I understand, the "private club" process is expensive and tedious for the restaurant owners,

Expensive? Moderately. It costs approximately $125 a month for the software that handles the "private club" stuff. Worse is the paperwork and bookkeeping requirements, which are not only expensive but quite time consuming.

I'll have an editorial on the subject of the two propositions in Friday's paper. Basically, proposition 1 is a very personal matter on the sale of beer and wine in convenience stores and supermarkets. I support it, but I understand those that don't.

Prop 2, which allows the removal of the private club stigma is a no brainer for voters. It doesn't affect the residents of SS one bit and only allows local businesses to keep more of their money (which is never a bad thing) instead of sending it out of town.

Well, it has been announced that Twisted S is closing their doors. It's said the reason is because they aren't getting enough family time. Too bad he didn't see that before he bought the building he just bought. I seriously doubt he'll get the all the money back that he invested in it.

Any news on the others?

That is sad news. I love their chicken fried chicken. Sometimes people don't realized how much time it takes to own and operate a business.

The Twisted S peeps don't own that building -- didn't even pay to renovate it. But I understand they were paying a big rental fee and not making any money (I don't buy the family thing -- you don't just "close" - you sell if there is a viable business to sell).

The Twisted S thing was something I was pointing to when I started the thread -- the thought was the building would be bought by another restaurant group and a new restaurant put in there. With Twisted S simply closing, apparently that previous deal fell through or we would have heard something.

Too bad.

Nothing yet, either, on the other restaurant I was alluding to. I can tell you it is a BBQ place that was looking --- but I haven't heard another thing on it.

I heard about that BBQ place and was wondering what ever happened with that.

The Genuine Texas BBQ Place

* Mesquite wood stacked outside.
* Flapping screen door with rusting Mrs. Baird's Bread or Rainbow Girl sign nailed to it.
* Brown butcher paper instead of plates, great for soaking up grease from meat.
* Evidence of the pit - either inside or outside.
* Smell or see smoke rising: place should look like it's on fire.
* Choice of chopped or sliced BBQ.
* White bread only : No rolls, French bread, croissants, etc..
* Plastic cutlery, never silverware -- even stainless steal.
* Toothpicks in an empty Tabasco sauce bottle.
* Fly swatter.

Regarding Stan's BBQ :

You forgot one: Iced tea served in Mason or Ball canning jars.
